Room by room

Lighting for Different Rooms & Spaces

Good lighting is rarely one fitting in the middle of the ceiling. Kitchens usually need task lighting over worktops as well as general lighting; living rooms benefit from layers that can be switched separately; bathrooms need fittings rated for the zone they sit in.

We'll talk through how each space is used and what switching arrangement makes sense before any cable is run, it's far easier to get right at first fix than to change afterwards.

  • Kitchens, task and worktop lighting
  • Living spaces, layered, separately switched lighting
  • Bathrooms, correctly rated fittings for the zone
  • Stairs and hallways, two-way switching
  • Bedrooms, bedside and reading lighting
  • Garages and outbuildings, practical, robust lighting

Getting it right

Planning a Lighting Installation

  1. 1

    What the space is for

How each room is used, where you sit, work and prepare food, and what needs to be lit properly rather than generally.
  2. 2

    Fittings and positions

Fitting types, ceiling positions and spacing agreed, along with anything that affects them such as joists, insulation or ceiling voids.
  3. 3

    Switching and control

Where switches go, what's switched together, two-way arrangements and dimming where the fittings support it.
  4. 4

    Circuit capacity

Whether the existing lighting circuits and consumer unit can take the work, or whether additional provision is needed.

The work

How the Work Is Carried Out

For a straightforward replacement or an additional light, the work is usually a single visit, isolate, install, test and tidy up. For larger installations the work is split into first fix, when cables are run and boxes fitted, and second fix, when the fittings go on and everything is tested and energised.

Everything we install is tested on completion and the appropriate certification issued. We take care with existing decoration and tell you up front where making good will be needed.

  • Existing circuit checked before work starts
  • Cable routes and fixings planned
  • Fittings installed and switching set up
  • Tested, certified and left clean

Solar Light Swapped for a Hard-Wired Up/Down Light

Solar wall lights look tidy but rarely give reliable light, the battery fades, the output drops and in winter they barely come on at all. On this South Essex bungalow the existing solar downlight by the front door was removed and replaced with a mains-powered up/down wall light.

The supply was run out to the fitting, the light mounted on the existing position and the wall made good around the old fixing. The result is consistent light over the door and house number every night, with no batteries to replace.

  • Old solar fitting removed and position reused
  • Mains supply run and protected correctly
  • External-rated up/down fitting installed
  • Wall made good, tested and certified

Help & advice

Lighting FAQs

“Can you replace my existing light fittings?”

Yes. Replacing fittings, including swapping older downlights for modern LED units, is routine work and usually completed in a single visit.

“Do you install downlights in existing ceilings?”

Yes, subject to what's above the ceiling, joists, insulation and pipework all affect where fittings can go. We check before agreeing positions.

“Can I have dimmable lighting?”

Where the fittings and lamps support dimming, yes. Not all LED fittings are dimmable, so it's worth deciding before the fittings are chosen.

“Do you install outdoor and garden lighting?”

Yes, garden, patio, driveway and security lighting using externally rated fittings on suitably protected circuits. We also replace solar wall lights with hard-wired up/down fittings for reliable light all year round.

“Can you add lighting to a garage or outbuilding?”

Yes, where a suitable supply exists or can be provided. We'll check the existing arrangement first.

“Will there be mess?”

Some work requires access above ceilings or chasing for switch drops. We tell you where making good will be needed before we start.

“My lights keep tripping the circuit, can you help?”

Yes. That's usually a fault on the circuit or a failed fitting, see electrical fault finding.
