Electrical Problems We Can Investigate

Most electrical faults show themselves in a handful of ways. Tell us what's happening and our electricians will investigate properly rather than guessing.

Circuit keeps tripping

A breaker or RCD that trips repeatedly, immediately or only when a particular appliance is used.

Sockets not working

One socket, a run of sockets or a whole ring circuit with no power.

Lights not working

Lights that won't come on, flicker, or trip the circuit when switched.

Partial loss of power

Some parts of the property working and others dead, often after a fault elsewhere.

Faulty switches & accessories

Damaged, discoloured, warm or loose sockets, switches and fittings.

Outdoor electrical faults

Garden lighting, external sockets, garage and outbuilding supplies affected by water ingress or damage.

Faults after building work

Circuits damaged during renovations, new kitchens, flooring or plastering.

Unexplained problems

Intermittent issues that come and go, or faults nobody has been able to pin down.

The method

How Electrical Fault Finding Works

Fault finding is a process of elimination carried out with proper test equipment. It's how we identify the actual cause rather than treating the symptom.

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptoms

What's happening, when it started, whether it's constant or intermittent and anything that triggers it. This narrows the search before we arrive.
  2. 2

    Inspection and testing

The electrician inspects the installation and carries out the relevant tests at the consumer unit, accessories and affected circuits.
  3. 3

    The fault is narrowed down

Circuits are isolated and tested section by section until the location and nature of the fault is identified.
  4. 4

    Repair options explained

We tell you what's caused it, what's needed to put it right and what it will cost before carrying out the repair.

Putting it right

Electrical Repairs After the Fault Is Found

Some faults are resolved on the same visit, a damaged accessory, a failed connection or a faulty appliance circuit. Others, such as cable damage buried in a wall or deteriorated wiring, need a planned repair, and occasionally testing shows that a section of the installation is better replaced than patched.

Whatever we find, you'll get a straight explanation of the cause, the options and the cost. We won't recommend a rewire because a socket has failed.

  • Damaged sockets, switches and fittings replaced
  • Failed connections and junctions repaired
  • Circuit and cable faults traced and resolved
  • Consumer unit and protective device faults investigated
  • Lighting circuit faults repaired
  • Outdoor and outbuilding circuits made safe

Safety first

If Something Looks or Smells Wrong

If you can smell burning, see scorching or discolouration around a socket or the consumer unit, or hear buzzing or crackling from electrical accessories, switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit if it is safe to do so and stop using it.

Don't keep resetting a breaker that trips straight back in, it's doing its job, and repeatedly resetting it doesn't fix the underlying fault.

If you have no power at all, check whether neighbours are affected and whether it's a supply issue rather than a fault inside the property. If the problem is inside your installation, give us a call and describe what's happening.

Recurring faults

When a Fault Keeps Coming Back

Faults that return after being repaired usually point to something broader, deteriorating cable, moisture in a circuit, or an installation that has been altered over the years without being tested as a whole.

In those cases a full inspection and test of the installation gives a much clearer picture than chasing the same symptom repeatedly, and the report tells you exactly which circuits need attention.

Help & advice

Electrical Fault Finding FAQs

“Why does my circuit keep tripping?”

Usually either an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance, or a fault on the wiring or an accessory. Testing identifies which, and the fix is very different in each case.

“How long does fault finding take?”

Straightforward faults are often traced within an hour or two. Intermittent or hidden faults can take longer, which is why we keep you updated as we work through the circuits.

“Will you fix the fault on the same visit?”

Often, yes, if the repair is within the scope of the visit and any parts needed are available. Where it isn't, we make the installation safe and arrange a return visit.

“Do you charge for fault finding?”

Fault finding is chargeable work because it takes time and test equipment. We'll be clear about the basis of the charge before attending.

“One socket has stopped working, is that serious?”

It could be a simple accessory failure or something affecting the whole circuit. Don't keep using it until it's been checked.

“Can you investigate faults after building work?”

Yes. Cables damaged during renovations, flooring or plastering are a common cause of faults and we trace them regularly.

“Should I have the whole installation tested?”

If faults keep returning, an EICR gives you a full picture of the installation rather than one circuit at a time.
