Survey stage

Planning the Installation

Not every property can take a charger without additional work. These are the things we check before quoting, sometimes an upgrade or alteration is needed first, and we'd rather tell you that up front.

Electrical supply

The type of supply, main fuse rating and earthing arrangement at the property.

Available capacity

What the existing installation already draws and whether there's headroom for a charger.

Consumer unit

Whether the board can accommodate a dedicated circuit with appropriate protection, or needs upgrading first.

Charger position

Where the unit will sit relative to parking, the vehicle's charge port and everyday use.

Cable route

How the cable runs from the board to the charger, including any external routing and making good.

Vehicle requirements

How you charge, how far you drive and what your vehicle actually supports.

Choosing a charger

Charger Options

Most home chargers are wall-mounted units on a dedicated circuit. The main practical differences are whether the unit is tethered, with a fixed cable, or untethered, taking your own cable, and what smart or scheduling features it offers.

Tethered units are convenient for daily charging in one place; untethered units keep the wall tidy and suit different vehicles or shared parking. We'll talk through what suits your vehicle and parking, and only offer chargers we genuinely install and support.

  • Tethered or untethered units
  • Smart charging and scheduling where supported
  • Suitable protection for the circuit
  • Neat, considered installation and cable routing

Help & advice

EV Charger FAQs

“Can any property have an EV charger?”

No. It depends on the electrical supply, available capacity, the consumer unit and where the vehicle is parked. Some properties need additional work first, and we'll tell you if that applies.

“How long does installation take?”

A typical home installation is completed in a day. Longer cable routes or preparatory electrical work can extend that.

“Do I need off-street parking?”

For a fixed home charge point, yes, the vehicle needs to be parked on your own property so the cable doesn't cross a public footpath.

“Will I need a new consumer unit?”

Not always. A charger needs a dedicated circuit with appropriate protection, and if the existing board can't provide that, a replacement may be needed.

“Tethered or untethered, which is better?”

Neither is better in general. Tethered is more convenient if you always charge the same vehicle in the same spot; untethered is tidier and more flexible.

“Can you install charge points at business premises?”

Yes, staff, fleet and visitor charging, subject to the site's supply and capacity. See commercial electricians.

“Do you handle grants?”

Grant availability changes over time and depends on your circumstances and property. We'll tell you honestly what we can and can't help with rather than making claims we can't stand behind.

“Is the installation certified?”

Yes. The new circuit is tested and certified, and the work is notified under our registration.
