The basics
What a Consumer Unit Actually Does
The consumer unit, often still called the fuse board or fuse box, is where the incoming electrical supply is split into the individual circuits around your property. It also houses the protective devices that disconnect a circuit when something goes wrong.
Older boards used rewireable fuses and offered little or no protection against electric shock. Modern consumer units use circuit breakers and residual current protection, and are designed to disconnect faults far more quickly and predictably.

Reasons a Replacement May Be Considered
Not every older board needs replacing. These are the situations where a replacement is most often discussed, we'll always test and explain what we've found before recommending anything.
No residual current protection
Installations without RCD protection on relevant circuits are commonly recorded as an observation on an EICR.
Nuisance tripping
A single RCD covering the whole property means one fault can take out everything. Individual protection avoids that.
No spare capacity
New circuits for a kitchen, extension, outbuilding or EV charger may need a board with room to expand.
EICR observations
Where a report records issues at the board, replacement is sometimes the most practical way to resolve them.
Damage or deterioration
Signs of overheating, damaged enclosures or obsolete devices that can no longer be sourced.
Modern protection
RCDs, RCBOs, MCBs and SPDs Explained
Modern consumer units can contain several different protective devices. Which ones are appropriate depends on the installation, not every replacement includes every device.
MCB
A Miniature Circuit Breaker protects a circuit against overload and short circuit, replacing the old rewireable fuse.
RCD
A Residual Current Device disconnects the supply quickly when it detects earth leakage, offering additional protection against electric shock.
RCBO
Combines RCD and MCB protection in one device per circuit, so a fault on one circuit doesn't disconnect the rest of the property.
SPD
A Surge Protection Device helps protect equipment from transient overvoltages. Whether one is required depends on a risk assessment of the installation.

How a Consumer Unit Replacement Is Carried Out

Inspection and testing
We test the existing circuits first. A new board can only be energised safely if the circuits feeding from it are in a suitable condition. - 2
Quotation and planning
You get a written quote covering the board, protective devices and any remedial work identified, plus the likely time off supply. - 3
Installation
The supply is isolated, the old board removed, the new unit fitted and the circuits connected, labelled and identified. - 4
Testing and certification
The installation is tested, energised and certified, and the work is notified under our registration.
Before you book
Rewiring, EICRs and Consumer Units
A new consumer unit doesn't fix faulty wiring. If testing shows problems on the existing circuits, those need resolving as part of the work, occasionally that means a partial rewire is a better use of your money than a new board alone.
Equally, if you've had an EICR that recorded observations at the board, a replacement may resolve several of them at once. We'll go through the report with you and explain which items the work will address.
